Week 5:Form Defining Space: Horizontal elements

Today I learned about spatial design, which is like a combination of space and form. Space is like an empty stage waiting to be filled, and form is the stuff that shapes and fills it, like walls and windows. I also got to know the horizontal elements that define space, and each of them has its own features. Different elements can create different spatial experiences.

In this class, we presented Project 1 and the teacher gave feedback.

Week 6:Form Defining Space: Vertical elements

In this class, I learned about the important role of vertical elements in spatial design. They can support structures, regulate the environment, divide spaces, etc. I also got to know six types of vertical elements, including vertical linear elements, single vertical plane, L-shaped plane, parallel planes, U-shaped plane, and four planes enclosure. And how they define and influence the spatial experience. This knowledge gives me a deeper understanding of spatial design.

Course 6:

In this class, the students who hadn't finished their presentations continued. Then the teacher introduced Project 2 to us. We need to find a space on campus and design and renovate it. We have to observe the flow of people and the surrounding environment to understand the needs of the users.

In this class, the students who hadn't finished their presentations continued. Then the teacher introduced Project 2 to us. We need to find a space on campus and design and renovate it. We have to observe the flow of people and the surrounding environment to understand the needs of the users.


Course 7 : 

In this class, we shared Part A from the previous session, and the teacher provided feedback and guidance for improvement. Additionally, we received a new task where we need to conduct a questionnaire and interviews to further understand the real needs of the users.

Week 8 : Self-directed Learning Week

This week is the self-directed learning week. We have further improved our homework. I conducted a questionnaire survey among 35 users and interviewed three classmates at school in my spare time. And I understood their real feelings about the area and made a summary.

Week 9 : SpatialRelationship

Learned about spatial relationship and organization, including 4 types: space within a space, interlocking spaces, spaces linked by a common space, and adjacent spaces. Each type has its unique characteristics and applications, and their roles in spatial design are better understood through examples.


Course 9:

In this class, the teacher gave us a detailed introduction to the user journey map. It can visually present the steps an individual takes to achieve a goal, helping designers and developers consider the user experience more comprehensively, enhance empathy, identify pain points, and provide important guidance for design and development.


Week 10 : Transformation of Form

Today we learned about the transformation of form, including additive and subtractive methods. Additive transformation changes form by adding elements, with types such as edge-to-edge contact, face-to-face contact, and interlocking volumes. Subtractive transformation changes form by removing part of the volume, and simple geometric forms are easy to undergo subtractive treatment. We also understood their applications in architecture and design through examples.

Course 10 :

In this class, the teacher provided feedback on our current project and introduced the content that should be included in the PPT for the final presentation.

Part A : TAYLOR'S ARCADIA


LOCATION: Floor 2, between Block C and Block D, next to the intersection of Library


In this part, I spend some time in this area every day to observe the flow of people and possible problems in this area, and record it. I found that people mostly come to this area to rest and study, so I made a preliminary decision that I plan to make this area into a quick learning interactive area.

Part B : QUANTITATIVE METHOD

Through the observation of part 1, I started to make a questionnaire. The questionnaire mainly included two parts:

After the teacher gave me feedback, I uploaded the questionnaire to Google Questionnaire and found 38 respondents and three offline respondents.
