3D Modeling Project 2: Themed Scene-Based Modeling
Recently, I decided to create a duplex interior design model in Blender. It was my first time tackling such a detailed project, and I wanted to share the process from start to finish.
Step 1: Planning and Preparation
Before starting, I gathered some reference images and decided on a two-story duplex design. The top floor would feature a bedroom and workspace, while the lower floor would include a living room and kitchen.
Step 2: Building the Room Frame
1.Creating the Basic Structure
I started with a cube and stretched it into a rectangular room in Edit Mode. Using Loop Cut , I added a dividing line to separate the two floors. Then, I deleted the front wall to create an open perspective.
2.Adding the Floor
I duplicated a section of the wall and positioned it as the second-floor platform, leaving space for the staircase.
Step 3: Creating the Staircase
1.Building the Steps
I used a small cube to model the first step and duplicated it repeatedly, adjusting its position to form a full staircase.
2.Adding Details
To make the staircase look more realistic, I adjusted the thickness of each step and added simple railings using rectangular shapes.
Step 4: Designing the Lower Floor (Living Room and Kitchen)
1.Making the Furniture
- Sofa: I modeled the sofa using a cube with subdivisions to create the cushion shape.
- TV Stand and Dining Table: These were made with scaled cubes, with subtle edge detailing to make them look polished.
2.Adding Kitchen Features
For the kitchen, I combined multiple cubes to create cabinets and used the Inset tool to carve out doors. I finished it by applying materials to distinguish the countertops from the cabinets.
Step 5: Designing the Upper Floor (Bedroom and Workspace)
1.Bed
I modeled the bed using a rectangular shape and added a subdivided blanket. Using the Cloth Simulation feature, I draped the blanket over the bed to give it a natural look.
2.Desk and Chair
I created a minimalist desk and chair from simple shapes and added a small table lamp to give the workspace a cozy vibe.
Step 6: Adding Windows and Decorations
1.Windows
I cut out large window spaces in the walls using the Boolean tool and applied a glass material (using the transparency channel in the Principled BSDF shader).
2.Decorations
To make the space feel lived-in, I added plants, framed pictures, and books, all modeled from basic shapes with texture mapping for details.
Step 7: Lighting and Rendering
1.Setting Up Lighting
I added point lights to mimic table lamps and ceiling lights for a warm indoor atmosphere.
I also used an HDRI map for environmental lighting to improve the overall brightness and mood.
2.Rendering
I rendered the final scene using the Cycles , enabling ray tracing for realistic lighting effects.
The entire process took me about two days, but seeing the final result made it all worth it.
