Assignment 1 :Case study and analysis

Requirements:

For the first assignment of Space Design 2 this semester, I need to research and analyze the space designs of two retail stores (1 overseas case and 1 field case), evaluate their layout, materials, lighting, colors, technology integration and sustainable practices through critical thinking, and explore how design can enhance brand identity and user experience. In addition, I need to identify existing design problems, propose innovative improvement solutions through hand-drawn sketches, and finally submit them in the form of 15-20 pages of PPT, including graphic analysis and at least 3 reference sources.

Part A: Apple Fifth Avenue (New York)
Part B;DJI | Hasselblad KLCC

Process:

When the teacher assigned the task in the first week, I started looking for suitable stores. When having dinner with friends on the weekend, I accidentally found that the design of the Apple Store in TRX was very interesting. So initially, I chose this store. However, in the second week, when the teacher showed the examples, I found that my senior sister had chosen the same store as me. The teacher said that this store for demonstration could not be chosen. So I searched for information online again and found that the design of the Apple Store on Fifth Avenue in New York was also very interesting and had a certain influence. Therefore, I decided to choose the Apple Store on Fifth Avenue in New York as the overseas store.

The Apple flagship store on Fifth Avenue in New York, with its iconic glass cube entrance and underground retail space design, perfectly integrates minimalist aesthetics with a technological experience, becoming a benchmark for global retail design.

I browsed many websites and found a lot of photos and materials. At the same time, I also used the official Apple website to learn about the brand's goals and main products. Although this process was arduous, I also learned a great deal of knowledge.

Regarding the local stores, I asked the teacher if I could choose Muji because I thought the newly renovated Muji in the Pyramid was very interesting. However, the teacher said that Muji doesn't have electronic products, so I started looking for a suitable store again. By chance, I came across DJI Hasselblad on Xiaohongshu, and it deeply attracted me. Especially, I think Hasselblad is highly consistent with the design emphasized by the camera. It not only showcases the camera itself but also enables customers to have a clearer understanding of the brand background and the camera's effects through the display of photographic works.

I think the most challenging part is that we need to hand-draw the floor plan. In my free time, I went to the store to carefully observe the interior layout and took a lot of photos for reference when I got home. I already had a rough composition in my mind, but only after drawing did I realize that it's quite difficult to control the layout well.

In this assignment, I think the biggest challenge is **how to balance in - depth analysis and creative improvement**. We need to thoroughly study the design logic of the existing retail space, and at the same time, come up with innovative and feasible optimization plans.

And I think my biggest problems are:
1. Time management and research efficiency:We need to quickly screen out effective information and avoid getting bogged down in too many details, which may affect the overall progress.
2. Hand - drawn expression ability:Sketches need to clearly convey the improvement ideas, but my drawing skills may not be professional enough.
3. Application of critical thinking:It is easy to stay at a superficial description level and difficult to deeply analyze the impact of the design on user behavior.

I will overcome these problems by formulating a detailed plan, referring to excellent case sketches, and discussing more with teachers.

After the courses in the third week ended, the teacher gave us feedback. However, the classmates rushed forward, and I didn't get a chance. Then the teacher had to go home. I mean I could send him an email, but I'm afraid the message might not be clear enough in the email. So I'll show it to him in the fourth week.

Feedback:

In the fourth week, I finally had my teacher review my work. There were problems with the expression regarding local stores and the scale of the floor plan. At the same time, the two improved sketches could be made more substantial by adding some colors.

Reflection:

Having completed this assignment, I not only gained something but also discovered quite a few problems. Through the assignment, I systematically mastered the design essentials such as spatial functional zoning and lighting color matching, proficiently used professional software to complete the design and analysis, and cultivated my design thinking. However, it also revealed problems such as superficial research, lack of on - the - spot investigation, insufficient design innovation, over - reliance on cases, and rough handling of details. At the same time, I was not confident enough during the presentation and basically read the script. In the future, I will strengthen on - the - spot research, focus on innovative ideas, polish the design details, and improve my professional capabilities.
