Assignment 1 :User Research, Storytelling & Functional Art Development

Requirements:

I need to complete a retail space design assignment to develop an interactive art installation through user research and storytelling. First, I need to identify the target users and collect data, then create 2-3 user roles and journey maps. Then I need to design at least two creative solutions, make a functional art installation prototype using recycled materials, and optimize and improve it based on feedback. Finally, I need to submit user roles, journey maps, concept boards, installation prototypes, and reflection documents. The assignment will be graded based on research depth, creativity, work quality, and iteration ability.

Because the local store I studied in assignment 1 is DJI|hassleblad, so assignment 2 will continue to focus on this store.

First, I made a questionnaire about the spatial design of the user experience of this store, but I also added a questionnaire for the general category of electronic product retail stores in case some respondents have not been to this store, but I will try to find users who have been to this store to fill it out, get real user feedback, and pave the way for subsequent design.

The teacher's feedback was that the language of the questionnaire read a little strange, and suggested that I use it to modify it, and also add an open option in the multiple-choice questions for the respondents to fill in.

This is the final questionnaire:

Here is the link to the Google Survey:

I then found 30 people to survey.
Finally, I summarized the survey results, and this is part of it:

I then combined the survey results to create two user personas :

Then I just made a user journey map.

At first, there were only three areas in the user journey map, but the teacher said I needed to add a new area, so I added the brand story area. I added soft music, but the teacher said it would be better to be able to show it, so I chose to make the brand story display method dynamic.

The second time, the teacher said that I still lacked an area that was not currently available in ordinary stores, so I added a product disassembly detail display area. However, the display was a bit too boring, so I will add dynamic display of disassembly and installation.

Next I completed the mood board and installation sketches.

This is the first version of the mood board and sketch.

Finally, I decided to take care of it in the first version, but the teacher said it looked too much like an arch and was a bit monotonous. I thought I could combine the curling elements of the film and interlock the layers so that users can walk in. So I rethought it.

This is the final mood board and sketch. The rest of the content is not recorded because I changed it directly from the original version, so I just show the final content.

Finally, I summarized my inspiration and came up with two versions.

Because the first version lacked some artistic and film elements, I finally kept the second version. The platform below was originally used to display the latest or most popular products, but the teacher suggested that it could be changed into a rest area, which would not affect the interaction but also allow for rest. At the same time, the interlocking rings above can be changed to different superimposed angles to create a height difference for the hanging screen below, and the floating screen below can be of different sizes.

But this version has too many similar contents, so I re-drew the sketch and redesigned it.

Finally, the teacher chose to let me combine these elements to create a device.

I tried to combine these elements and came up with an initial device, and then under the guidance of the teacher, I obtained the final device design.

Reflection:

Through this assignment, I realized that designing an installation or space is not a simple matter. We need to design it according to the actual needs of users. For example, the feedback from the customer of the questionnaire we made at the beginning can let me know the user needs more quickly and clearly, and I can design it according to the real needs of users. At the same time, the questionnaire is not made casually. I need to think about the design and experience of the store.

During the user journey, I need to think about all the real situations of a user from understanding to leaving the store. The real journey cannot be made single when the user leaves. The user needs to have lingering feelings.

At the same time, when designing the mood board and sketch, I kept looking for inspiration. It is not easy to make an interesting, artistic, and brand-compliant installation. I kept looking for inspiration in other photos. In this way, I realized that designing an installation or a space is not an easy thing, nor can it be done by imagination alone. It requires actual hands-on sketching and combining inspiration to get the final product.

Looking back on the entire project process, every step from investigation and analysis is full of frustration, but these frustrations taught me that design is a continuous iterative process, each link is linked layer by layer, and space design is not just the design of a space or installation, but more importantly, the user experience.
